Nervous System Architecture
The nervous system is a prediction engine — not a passive receiver. It constructs every experience you have from prior patterns, not incoming data. This module maps that architecture: why you respond to the model, how the model was built, and how the model can update.
What this module maps
Your brain doesn't wait for experience to arrive and then react to it. It predicts what's coming — constantly, automatically, based on everything that came before — and generates your experience from those predictions. Incoming sensory data is used to update the prediction, not to construct the experience from scratch.
This is not a flaw. It's a profoundly efficient system. Prediction is faster than reaction, and in an environment with real threats, speed matters. But it has one significant consequence: you are always responding to your model of the world, not the world itself.
When the model was built in circumstances that are no longer your current circumstances — which is true for almost everyone — you are, in a very precise sense, living in the past.
"The human believes it is responding to what is happening. What it is actually responding to is a compressed history of what has happened before — projected forward into the present. The present is almost entirely constructed. The incoming data accounts for perhaps five percent of the experience. The other ninety-five percent is the model."
Polyvagal theory — developed by Stephen Porges — describes the nervous system not as a simple on/off switch between calm and stressed, but as a three-state hierarchy: ventral vagal (regulated, connected, safe), sympathetic (mobilized, threat-ready), and dorsal vagal (collapsed, shutdown, immobilized).
Most people know sympathetic activation — the racing heart, the tension, the urgency. Fewer can recognize dorsal shutdown — the flatness, disconnection, and absence of aliveness that the nervous system uses when mobilisation isn't available. Both are protective responses. Neither is malfunction. The architecture determines which state is available and when.
