The Emotional Loop System
Emotion is a biological event — not a quality of mind but a physical process with a beginning, a middle, and a required end. When cycles don't complete, they accumulate. This module maps how emotional loops work, what interrupts them, and what builds up when the interruption becomes chronic.
What this module maps
The dominant model of emotion treats it as a state: you are happy, you are anxious, you are angry. This is a useful shorthand and a poor map. Neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett's research establishes that emotions are not fixed categories that the brain categorises — they are constructed events, assembled from interoceptive signals, prediction, and context.
More practically: every emotional event is a biological cycle. It has a trigger — a change in the body's internal state or an external signal the nervous system reads as significant. It builds — the body mobilizes resources for a response. And it requires completion — a physical discharge and return to baseline.
There's a second layer where most loops snag. The signal arrives first — wordless, a shift in the body. Then the mind names it, and the name arrives loaded with a story: not "tightness in the chest" but "I'm failing again," "this always happens to me." A story, unlike a wave, has no built-in completion — it can run indefinitely, re-firing the very build it claims to only describe. Reading the signal underneath the story is how you get back to the part of the cycle that can actually finish.
The problem isn't that people feel too much. It's that the cycle keeps being interrupted before it completes — and incomplete cycles accumulate in the body as residue.
"What Alien X observes is not humans overwhelmed by emotion — it is humans interrupted mid-cycle, repeatedly, over years. The emotion was never too much. The permission to complete was insufficient. The body is not the problem. The body has been waiting, quite patiently, to finish what it started."
